Harmeet Dhillon is stepping down this week as Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights at the Department of Justice. During her tenure she oversaw creation of a Second Amendment Section in the Civil Rights Division that investigates alleged constitutional violations, files lawsuits, and intervenes in litigation over gun rights.

The division sued the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department over concealed-carry permit delays affecting more than 8,000 applications, with initial records showing two approvals and interviews scheduled up to two years later, and by August 2026 a settlement followed reduced processing times.

It also challenged San Jose concealed-carry fees approaching $1,600, Minnesota purchase permitting and waits of nearly 60 days, and Montgomery County, Maryland restrictions on lawful public carry for licensed people, while investigating permit revocations in Philadelphia and issuance delays in New Jersey and Connecticut. Not all of those cases have reached a final judgment.
