Firearms Policy Coalition lawyers sent letters to attorneys general in 15 states asking them to halt enforcement of statutes that still require National Firearms Act registration for silencers, short-barreled rifles, short-barreled shotguns and similar items, and to begin repealing those statutes.
The request follows a federal district court decision in Texas that the government may not rely on its taxing authority to impose making, registration and transfer rules on firearms Congress subjected to a zero tax. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives then issued nationwide guidance applying that outcome so that eligible buyers outside those 15 states may obtain the items after a standard firearm background check. The agency will keep processing the older registration forms for residents of the 15 states.
