Big Ten officials restored one second in the Western Michigan-Michigan contest after television and stadium clocks had already reached zero, giving Michigan a final snap that produced the winning catch.

The conference said a Western Michigan player began his leap from an established out-of-bounds stance with his left foot and touched the ball while one second remained. Officials cited NCAA football rule 4-2-3-a, which stops the clock at one second, and said video review supported putting that second back. The Big Ten also said all clocks had been synchronized before the game.

Spectators criticized the ruling on social media.
