The Department of Justice and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives announced more than 30 new rules in April 2026. Everytown, Brady, and Giffords objected to the rollback of earlier ATF regulations.

Everytown said the changes favor industry profits over public safety and pointed to ATF language that the rules could raise public safety risks. Two of the rules, in that account, include acknowledgments that the changes could produce mass casualties.

The package includes allowing an in-state dealer to ship a firearm to a buyer’s home under specified procedures, easing indefinite record-retention requirements, and ending a prior policy that revoked federal firearms licenses for paperwork errors such as abbreviated county names.
