Oregon has seen four mass shootings this year, including an October 15 attack at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend where a 16-year-old climbed a fence, fired a shotgun through locked-door glass, and killed three children and a teacher. A teacher tackled the gunman and a parent who entered the building fatally shot him; the mother had legally bought the pump-action shotgun for his birthday.
Everytown for Gun Safety places Oregon 12th for gun safety laws that ban weapons at the capitol, let universities bar them on campus, keep guns from people under domestic-abuse restraining orders, and impose a four-year buying ban after certain violent misdemeanors, plus 2023 prohibitions on homemade and 3D-printed firearms. Measure 114 is counted in the ranking but is blocked in court and would not have stopped this shooting. Some groups still seek further measures.
