Europe on Fire Proves the Value of Our Second Amendment

Listen to Article

Paris saw arson, looting and rioting on a Sunday night as police had limited ability to stop it and President Emmanuel Macron attended a Celine Dion concert with his wife. A shop owner faced masked people taking goods from her store after she asked why they were doing so, and they kept going. France makes even a bolt-action hunting rifle or shotgun hard to obtain: applicants must be 18, pass criminal, medical and mental-health checks plus safety training, and hold a hunting license or club membership, after which processing can last months or years with unexplained denials; concealed carry is banned, a safe is required, ammunition must sit apart from the gun, and police may inspect homes, with fines, forfeiture and prison possible. In 2008 the Supreme Court held in Heller that the Second Amendment protects an individual right to keep common firearms at home for self-defense, striking a 1975 District of Columbia ban on most handguns and a rule that legal guns stay unloaded and disassembled or trigger-locked.
