Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed posted YouTube recordings that he later made private, including a 2023 clip in which he proposed rewriting the Constitution so a healthcare guarantee would replace the existing firearms clause, claiming the change would cut gun deaths and save lives through medical care. His spokeswoman said he respects that clause while treating healthcare access as a right.

An archive site later carried transcripts of about 100 such videos after a CNN report, including a 2022 recording in which he said the clause covers only organized militias, not private citizens, and that only groups such as police should receive weapons. The campaign did not say whether those views had changed. The Supreme Court ruled in 2008 that the clause protects individual firearm possession apart from militia service.
