Chris Murphy Boasts Gun Control Lobby Has ‘Never Been Stronger’

Listen to Article

Chris Murphy’s chest-thumping about the gun-control lobby’s supposed new muscle lands with a thud once you look past the press release and into the actual courtroom record. The same senator who once promised “universal background checks” now watches as the Supreme Court’s Bruen decision has already toppled magazine bans, carry restrictions, and “sensitive place” rules from coast to coast, while statehouses in Florida, Texas, and Tennessee have moved from defensive to offensive—constitutional carry, permitless reciprocity, and even constitutional amendments enshrining the right to keep and bear arms. Those are not the footprints of a movement in retreat; they are the unmistakable signs of a lobby that has lost the narrative, the courts, and the map.

What Murphy is really measuring is donor cash and cable-news airtime, not legislative or judicial outcomes. The gun-control groups he praises have spent record sums only to see their signature proposals stall in Congress, get struck down in federal district courts, and lose at the ballot box in states that once leaned blue. Meanwhile, the 2A community has quietly consolidated gains: more states now treat the right to bear arms as presumptively protected, more citizens carry daily without government permission, and the cultural argument has shifted from “reasonable restrictions” to “shall not be infringed.” If this is what “never been stronger” looks like, the gun-control lobby may soon discover that strength without results is just expensive theater.
