Chris Matthews: ‘AOC Is as American as Apple Pie’

Listen to Article

Chris Matthews’ syrupy declaration that Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is “as American as apple pie” lands like a punchline in a gun shop on the day after a new ATF rule drops. The MSNBC host’s praise is less about patriotism than about re-branding the congresswoman’s hard-left agenda—Green New Deal, wealth taxes, and, yes, sweeping gun-control—as the new normal. For the 2A community, the line is a reminder that cultural capture often precedes legislative capture; if the loudest voices in media can normalize policies that treat the Second Amendment like an embarrassing relic, the political cost of chipping away at it shrinks by the day.

What Matthews glosses over is that AOC’s version of “American” includes the same roster of restrictions—universal background checks, red-flag laws, assault-weapon bans—that have already been road-tested in states where legal carry is treated like a scarlet letter. Those experiments haven’t reduced crime so much as they’ve created a two-tier system: well-connected urbanites keep armed security while suburban and rural Americans lose the practical means to defend themselves. The 2A grassroots has watched this movie before; every time a media figure airbrushes the messenger, the message still arrives in the form of magazine-capacity limits and “ghost gun” registration schemes.

The deeper implication is strategic. If the left can sell confiscatory economics and cultural scolding as “authentic Americana,” the right can no longer rely on reflexive patriotism to rally support for gun rights. The next cycle of fights—over pistol braces, private sales, and the next bump-stock-style reinterpretation—will be won or lost in the narrative space long before they reach the courthouse steps. Matthews may think he’s offering a benediction; to Second Amendment advocates, it sounds more like a warning order.
