California amended Assembly Bill 2047 after its February introduction by Assemblymember Rebecca Bauer-Kahan. The original version required 3D printers sold or transferred in the state to include approved hardware or software that would stop them from producing identified firearm files.

The current text instead requires the Department of Justice, beginning no later than July 1, 2027, to check quarterly whether ASTM International has issued standards for firearm-blocking technology. If those standards exist, the department then has 24 months to issue guidance or regulations that set minimum performance standards based on them. If ASTM has issued nothing by July 1, 2029, the department need make no further determinations under the bill.
