President Donald Trump held his first in-person meeting with newly installed British Prime Minister Andy Burnham on Tuesday in New York during bilateral talks at the United Nations General Assembly. Trump described Burnham as possessing many strengths and a businesslike approach after several earlier phone conversations, adding that Burnham understands the tasks ahead.

Trump said his dealings with Britain have improved relative to those under the previous prime minister. He noted strong public attachment to the country and substantial unused capacity that could produce better results under different political direction, in contrast to some other nations whose prospects he views as limited.

Trump also discussed with Burnham the effects of current migration and energy policies plus the proposed transfer of the Chagos Islands, a joint military site, which he continues to oppose.
