One day after Election Day, Arizona lawmakers who favor firearm restrictions indicated they intend to advance such measures in 2027. Representative Nancy Gutierrez of Legislative District 18 named gun safety legislation a primary goal, according to a November 4 Arizona Mirror report. Governor Katie Hobbs won a second term and Democrats prepared to control both chambers of the Legislature for the first time in 60 years.
In 2026, lawmakers introduced bills to restrict certain semiautomatic firearms and magazines, require extra background checks on private transfers, mandate permits and training for concealed carry, and impose waiting periods on purchasers. Those bills failed under the previous majority, though similar proposals could now reach Hobbs more readily, and the NRA said it will oppose legislation that threatens Second Amendment rights of law-abiding Arizonans.
