Alaska AG Cori Mills asked the legislature convening January 19, 2027, to resolve a clash between a state weapons prohibition and new federal practice after an injunction halted mandatory NFA registration of suppressors, short-barreled firearms and other covered devices. The ATF still processes voluntary applications because Alaska ties its defense to those filings, yet federal guidance leaves local bans intact, and the Department of Law will review prosecutions in light of the ruling, that guidance and constitutional concerns. Possession or transfer without registration remains a class C felony with five years prison and a $50,000 fine.
