About That ‘Guns Are Leading Cause of Death for Kids’ Claim

A Second Amendment Foundation review of CDC WONDER provisional 2025 mortality figures found 2099 firearm related deaths among people ages 1 to 17. Unintentional injuries killed 4140 in that group, including 97 accidental shootings, while transport accidents totaled 2223 and motor vehicle crashes also reached 2099.

Kostas Moros, the groups director of legal research and education, issued the findings in an October 2026 fact sheet after a mid October Giffords social media statement. The sheet notes CDC leading cause rankings differ from that statement and that treating every firearm death as one category while splitting accidents produces a different ranking than combining all unintentional deaths.

The review states gun related totals briefly exceeded traffic totals in high crime years only under those two statistical choices.
