ATF Director Robert Cekada said on X that the bureau is drafting public instructions after a Texas federal court on August 5 invalidated the leftover National Firearms Act registration duty. He called reports from unnamed sources that the agency planned harsh retaliation against owners completely untrue, adding that staff will obey the order and will not enforce rules against covered people in conflict with it.

On August 27 Representative Tracy Mann of Kansas wrote Cekada seeking prompt, unambiguous direction so owners and dealers are not left to interpret the change on their own. Cekada said the work is proceeding carefully so federal and state statutes stay aligned and makers, licensed dealers, and lawful owners avoid legal trouble now or later; the finished document will appear on the ATF website.
