Amtrak Union Blasts Plan to Let Passengers Carry Firearms

Amtrak plans to allow passengers to bring firearms on intercity trains beginning in January 2027, a change opposed by the Transport Workers Union, which represents 360 onboard service employees. Under the planned rules, travelers would place guns in personal lock boxes, hand the cased weapons to a station agent who would attach an Amtrak combination lock, carry them on the train, and have an agent at the arrival station remove the lock. John Feltz, International Rail Division director of the Transport Workers Union, said commercial aircraft require firearms to be checked with luggage instead of brought into the cabin and argued that allowing them in train cars where riders share limited space was unwise, adding that a defective case or lock or someone forcing access could endanger riders and crew.
