Home Stretch Polling Suggests Gun Policy a Low Priority Headed into Election Day

October polling from major firms shows gun policy is a low voter priority before Election Day. Three percent in an NBC News Decision Desk survey listed it as their top issue, tying last and trailing the economy by twenty eight points, and one percent of registered voters in an Economist YouGov poll named it most important even though fifty five percent wanted stricter laws. Pew Research found forty five percent of registered voters consider it very important for 2026 congressional races, the lowest since 2020, while six percent call it unimportant, the highest share in that series.

Gun control organizations have outspent rights groups three to one, and the NRA recently ran its first major ad of the cycle against Texas Democrat James Talarico. A July Reuters Ipsos poll gave Republicans a narrow edge over Democrats on handling gun violence and control.
