Resident hunters of upland game birds in Montana open their season 10 days before nonresidents this year. The 2025 legislature passed Senate Bill 514 to create that difference.

Nonresidents hunting public land or private land in Fish, Wildlife and Parks access programs, including block management, must wait those extra 10 days. The wait applies to every upland species except mountain grouse, which are blue grouse, spruce grouse also known as Franklin grouse, and ruffed grouse.
