Safari Club International voiced disappointment after Colorado voters declined Amendment 83, a measure that would have added a constitutional right to hunt and fish certain wildlife and named hunting and fishing as preferred wildlife management methods. Nearly one million ballots favored the proposal, or 44.4 percent, which fell short of the 55 percent required to amend the state constitution.
SCI and its chapters together provided $365,000 to Colorado Wildlife Deserves Better, Coloradans for Responsible Wildlife Management, and Yes on 83, while chapters also handed out yard signs, held events, and contacted local residents. CEO W. Laird Hamberlin said the organization will keep working with partners, lawmakers, conservation groups, and chapters to protect hunting and fishing access and science-based wildlife management, and SCI thanked those who backed the campaign.
