SCI and Partners Demand Return of Millions in Wildlife Funding in Maine

Safari Club International joined the National Rifle Association of America and the Sportsman's Alliance of Maine in pressing Maine to halt the shift of interest on Inland Fisheries and Wildlife money into the General Fund, restore retained amounts, and meet legal duties. Formal notice went to Attorney General Frey, with the groups saying the practice has run more than 30 years and moved tens of millions of dollars from the fish and wildlife agency.

They argue it conflicts with the Maine Constitution at Article IX, Section 22 and with federal rules on hunting and fishing license revenue, including Pittman-Robertson Wildlife Restoration Act aid. Maine received more than $11 million from that program in 2024, nearly half the agency yearly appropriation. The organizations want interest credited to the department from now on plus repayment of past sums, and they say they will go to court if the state does not correct the matter.
