A hunter suffered serious injuries in a bear attack on state land south of Augusta near Elk Creek and Haystack Butte.

Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks is investigating the incident, which happened on the morning of September 14 while the victim hunted with a bow. He drove himself home afterward and received treatment at Benefis Hospital after traveling there in a private vehicle.

Game wardens and bear specialists keep working the case and have posted notices to alert others to bear activity nearby. Investigators have not yet identified the bear species.
