Utah fly-fishing guide Bridget Fabel spent a summer afternoon hiking rugged ponderosa and basalt country to place two trail cameras while scouting for cow elk under an over-the-counter archery tag. She mounted one unit at a spring ringed with tracks and another beside a freshly found shed antler, then descended to a hike-in lake.

With a few hours of light remaining she fished from the bank, leaving her pack and tackle in the pines, and landed several large, bright-red cutthroat. About an hour before dark, movement on the slope behind her in thick cover startled her; she could not identify the source.

She chose to shift position so she could stay hidden while gaining a clearer view of whatever was approaching.
