A 3D-printable lid plus focusing inserts has been issued for the front lens housing of a military-specification PVS-14. Rubber rings supply the friction that holds the lid in position. That method does away with tape or any cord wrapped around the whole unit. The files stay free and openly shared, and the maker welcomes but does not require small donations.
