A bison struck the front of a Ford Ranger driven by seasonal mechanic Kyle Weber on a dark two-lane road in Yellowstone National Park around 2:45 a.m. Weber came through trees around a corner, saw the animal standing in the roadway, and braked to a stop. The bison moved nearer, paused, then ran into the truck, shoving it backward more than a foot before leaving in the opposite direction.
The wheel now scrapes the bumper on sharp turns, though the headlight and remaining functions still operate. Months earlier in the park a bull bison threw grandfather Carl Isom-McDaniel eight feet into the air; he broke bones yet stayed conscious and in good spirits, photographer Mike MacLeod said after recording the scene.
