By invoking FDR’s Social Security as proof that yesterday’s “radical” is today’s mainstream, Van Hollen hopes to launder the DSA’s more ambitious agenda—Medicare for All, the Green New Deal, and, crucially, sweeping gun-control measures that treat the Second Amendment as an embarrassing relic. The rhetorical trick works only if voters forget that Social Security was enacted through the regular legislative process, not by redefining constitutional rights out of existence.

For the 2A community the stakes are immediate. DSA-backed candidates routinely champion “assault-weapon” bans, magazine restrictions, and red-flag laws that shift the burden onto law-abiding owners rather than criminals. When party leaders shrug at the DSA’s growing influence, they signal that such policies are no longer disqualifying; they are simply the next chapter in an ever-expanding progressive program. That shift matters in purple states and swing districts where even modest Democratic gains can flip committee gavels and accelerate funding for ATF rulemaking or new excise taxes on ammunition.

The practical takeaway is that 2A advocates cannot treat the DSA as an exotic outlier; its priorities are being absorbed into the broader Democratic platform. Primary challenges, state-level organizing, and relentless scrutiny of every candidate’s donor list are now baseline survival tactics. If the party’s leadership continues to frame constitutional carry and due-process protections as negotiable concessions on the road to “progress,” gun owners will have to decide whether the big tent still has room for them—or whether it is time to pitch their own.
