Listen to Article

Two Canadian Armed Forces reservists from the 7th Toronto Regiment were arrested on August 11, 2026, and charged with kidnapping, organized crime, and theft of firearms and weapons. Sachintha Fernando and James Moreau, both bombardiers in the 32 Canadian Brigade unit at Moss Park Armory, were taken off duty with restricted access to bases, equipment, and facilities while they remain in the force during an administrative review of their continued service.

The Department of National Defence has referred questions on the accusations to Toronto Police, which has not commented publicly, and army officials are cooperating in the investigation. Fernando enlisted as a reservist in January 2020 and has not been sent on operations. Moreau joined in March 2018 and took part in Operation LASER, the military response to the coronavirus pandemic.
