Trump: ‘We Are Trying to Have CNN Go in a Normal Path’

Listen to Article

President Trump’s blunt assessment that his team is steering CNN back toward a “normal path” lands like a shot across the bow of the legacy media, and the 2A community should pay close attention. For years, CNN’s coverage of firearms has been a steady drumbeat of selective outrage—highlighting every tragic misuse while burying defensive-gun-use stories, statistical context, and the constitutional text itself. When the president signals he intends to normalize the network’s framing, he is implicitly acknowledging that the current narrative is not neutral reporting but an activist project aimed at shaping public opinion against the right to keep and bear arms. That matters because CNN’s megaphone still influences swing-district voters, corporate advertisers, and even some Republican lawmakers who fear being labeled “extreme” for defending the plain text of the Second Amendment.

The deeper implication is that media normalization is a prerequisite for policy normalization. If CNN’s prime-time panels stop treating every shall-issue reform or constitutional-carry bill as a national emergency, the Overton window shifts. Lawmakers who quietly support national reciprocity or suppressor reform suddenly face less manufactured backlash, and the endless cycle of “assault-weapon” panic loses oxygen. Conversely, if the effort fails and CNN doubles down, the 2A grassroots gains a clearer target: an outlet whose editorial choices demonstrably conflict with both empirical data on defensive gun uses and the historical understanding of the right affirmed in Heller and Bruen. Either outcome sharpens the stakes heading into the next election cycle, where control of the narrative may prove as decisive as control of the Senate.
