Connecticut Democratic Senator Chris Murphy told a Connecticut audience on August 26 that first-generation immigrants and people without legal status commit crimes at lower rates than native-born Americans, so communities with recent arrivals are safer.

Mark Krikorian of the Center for Immigration Studies said lower rates do not help Americans killed by people here illegally. He said migration supporters cannot concede costs exist because they treat migrants as an oppressed group beyond blame, accept some harm as inevitable, and that Murphy does not face the risk his daughter will die as Laken Riley did in 2024.

The Department of Homeland Security said on August 26 it had removed German Oliverio Miranda-Tapia, a Mexican Paisas gang member deported August 20 with Connecticut convictions for sexual assault of a relative under 16, risk of injury to a child, assault, and reckless driving, who was removed in July 2020 and reentered illegally. Advocates stress crime rates rather than death counts and a report finding no detectable change in violent crime rates where undocumented shares rose.
