‘That’s How They Count the Vote’: Media Insist California’s Vote-Count System Is Normal

Listen to Article

California’s glacial vote-count process isn’t some quirky administrative hiccup—it’s a deliberate feature of a system that rewards opacity and punishes scrutiny. When ballots keep “appearing” days after Election Night, the narrative that “this is how we’ve always done it” collapses under the weight of basic math: in a state where one-party rule is treated as a birthright, the ability to stretch the count becomes a tool for shaping outcomes rather than reflecting them. For the 2A community, the parallel is obvious—gun owners have spent decades watching the same slow-motion bureaucratic games played with background-check databases, “assault weapon” registries, and micro-stamping mandates that never quite get implemented because the goal isn’t safety, it’s attrition.

The deeper danger lies in how this counting theater normalizes distrust. When legacy outlets insist the process is “normal,” they’re really telling voters that questioning institutional control is itself the problem. That mindset travels straight into the firearms debate: if you can’t trust the integrity of the ballot box, you certainly can’t trust the same institutions to fairly administer shall-issue carry, red-flag laws, or the next round of magazine bans. California’s model shows what happens when one side controls both the rules and the scoreboard—Second Amendment supporters end up litigating in courtrooms while the other side keeps moving the goalposts through administrative delay.

For gun owners nationwide, the takeaway is strategic rather than partisan: election integrity and the right to keep and bear arms are joined at the hip. A system that can stretch a vote count for weeks can just as easily stretch a permitting process, bury FOIA requests on ATF rule changes, or quietly expand prohibited-person lists without legislative debate. The 2A community has every reason to demand real-time transparency at the ballot box, because the same forces that benefit from drawn-out counts have already proven they’ll use every lever of government to chip away at the right that protects all the others.
