Miguel Ángel Pérez Triano left his post Monday as the Spanish central government’s delegate in Ceuta after seven months. The Ceuta-born official, who also vacated his role as local secretary general of the Socialist Workers Party, said the climate of local anger had taken a personal and family toll and that he would let another person carry on the remaining work.

Residents have pressed officials for answers as a large migrant influx that started in late July remains unresolved, with thousands still on the streets or in temporary shelters. Pérez Triano said he had faced insults, threats and a wreath placed at the delegation office, which he described as violence, and that critics wrongly held him responsible for matters beyond his authority.
