Bernie Sanders is once again positioning himself as the purity police of the Democratic primary process, this time demanding that super PACs—specifically AIPAC—be barred from influencing who gets the party’s nomination. The Vermont senator’s call comes as AIPAC-backed groups have poured millions into defeating progressive challengers who criticize Israel, a move Sanders frames as corrosive to democracy. Yet the same senator who rails against “dark money” in primaries has never shown the same urgency when it comes to the billions funneled into gun-control super PACs that target pro-Second Amendment Democrats in red, purple, and even deep-blue districts.

For the firearms community, the irony is hard to miss: Sanders is comfortable with outside spending when it advances gun-control candidates, but suddenly finds the practice intolerable when the checks are signed by a pro-Israel lobby. This selective outrage underscores a broader pattern in which progressive leaders treat the right to keep and bear arms as an asterisk on constitutional rights—something that can be regulated, funded against, or even litigated away without the same hand-wringing reserved for other single-issue donors.
