Raskin: Trump Engineered a ‘Collusive, Fraudulent Settlement on the Country’

Listen to Article

Rep. Jamie Raskin’s latest broadside on MSNBC isn’t really about a “collusive, fraudulent settlement”—it’s about the Biden-era DOJ’s weaponization task force being told to stand down. By labeling the Trump administration’s decision to shutter that office a back-room deal, Raskin is telegraphing panic that the same legal machinery once aimed at parents at school boards, pro-life protesters, and gun owners may now be turned off. For the 2A community the message is unmistakable: the institutional habit of treating lawful firearm ownership as a national-security threat is losing its bureaucratic home, and the people who built that habit are already rewriting the script as “collusion.”

The deeper implication is structural. The so-called anti-weaponization fund was never a neutral oversight body; it was a policy shop that coordinated with ATF on “zero-tolerance” enforcement priorities, social-media monitoring of gun-rights speech, and selective prosecutions that disproportionately hit FFL holders and Second Amendment advocates. Shuttering it removes an entire layer of coordination between prosecutors and regulators—an architecture that made it easier to convert regulatory paperwork violations into felony cases. When Raskin calls the closure a fraud on the country, he is conceding that the prior arrangement relied on that very coordination to keep pressure on the gun culture.

For gun owners the practical takeaway is that venue still matters. Even with a friendlier DOJ, state attorneys general and blue-city DAs retain tools to harass dealers and owners through novel theories under state law. The Raskin reaction shows the institutional left understands this shift and is already preparing the narrative that any reduction in federal targeting equals corruption. The 2A community’s task is to treat that narrative as the tell it is: evidence that the previous enforcement regime was never about public safety but about political control, and that its defenders will fight to restore it the moment they regain power.
