Rep. Jamie Raskin of Maryland appeared Wednesday on CNN and described a bill he filed that would require the Smithsonian to keep banners featuring President Donald Trump that now hang on federal buildings in Washington, including the Labor Department and the Justice Department.

He said those materials and similar items should become museum displays so later generations can study this period of authoritarian rule. Raskin argued that Trump and his allies are attacking the Smithsonian and the Museum of American History in an effort to hide lessons about slavery, the Civil War, and the civil rights movement.

He said the country should document rather than conceal that record and present it as an exhibit so it is not forgotten.
