Illinois Governor JB Pritzker’s latest CNN appearance reveals the same ideological sleight-of-hand that gun owners have watched for decades: redefine a fundamental category—biological sex, just as they once redefined “the militia”—then insist the new definition is an unassailable civil right. By claiming people possess a “right to live the life that they’re born to,” Pritzker erases the very biological reality that makes sex-segregated spaces necessary, much the way anti-2A politicians erase the individual-rights reading of the Second Amendment by pretending the prefatory clause swallowed the operative one. The result is identical: policy built on linguistic inversion rather than observable fact, whether that means letting male athletes displace female competitors or letting may-issue permitting schemes swallow the right to keep and bear arms.
For the 2A community the lesson is straightforward. Every time government officials subordinate empirical reality to political narrative—whether the narrative concerns chromosomes or the plain text of “shall not be infringed”—they create precedent that can later be turned against gun owners. If a governor can declare that fairness in women’s sports must yield to self-identification, the same official can declare that public safety requires red-flag laws, magazine bans, or discretionary carry permits. Both moves rest on the premise that feelings and administrative preference outweigh material reality and enumerated rights. The Supreme Court’s recent decision simply reminded states that Title IX still means what it says; Pritzker’s reaction shows how quickly that reminder will be spun as bigotry unless citizens remain vigilant at the ballot box and in the courts.
The deeper implication is cultural. A political class willing to jettison observable biology to accommodate ideology will not hesitate to jettison the historical and textual basis of the Second Amendment when it becomes inconvenient. Gun owners who shrug at the sports controversy are ignoring a live demonstration of how rights are dismantled: first language is captured, then categories are collapsed, then dissent is stigmatized. The only durable defense is consistent insistence on empirical truth—whether that truth concerns XX chromosomes or the individual nature of the right to keep and bear arms—because once reality becomes optional, every constitutional guarantee becomes negotiable.
