Pope Leo XIV prayed at a four-step staircase in the Garden of the Carmelites on the Catholic University of Paris campus during a visit to France on September 26, 2026. Flowers covered the gray stone, which is inscribed in Latin Hic Cicidereunt, at a memorial to clergy slain in the September 1792 massacres of the French Revolution.

The uprising, then three years old, had targeted King Louis XVI and the Catholic Church, and its leaders created a Cult of Reason. At the Carmelite convent garden off Rue de Vaugirard, armed men killed about 150 priests held there, among them the Archbishop of Arles, who was cut down with a sword and a pike after he identified himself. The Church later beatified those victims.
