New York Governor Kathy Hochul appointed Letitia James as special prosecutor after an alleged gang rape at Cornell University involving seven male students. Hochul said she was outraged by how Cornell and the Tompkins County district attorney handled the case.

James had served as New York attorney general. Cornell sits in Tompkins County.
