While the rest of America was being scolded for daring to gather with family or attend church, CNN’s Jake Tapper and Dr. Anthony Fauci were enjoying a cozy dinner together—complete with wine, laughter, and zero social distancing. The same week these two were breaking bread, Fauci was publicly warning against “small household gatherings,” and CNN was dutifully amplifying the message that any gathering outside of approved political protests was a public-health menace. The optics are bad enough, but the hypocrisy runs deeper: the same institutions that demanded Americans surrender their right to assemble were perfectly comfortable carving out exceptions for themselves.

For the 2A community, this episode is a textbook case of why government power must be met with permanent skepticism. When officials can arbitrarily decide which gatherings are “safe” and which are not, they are also free to decide which constitutional rights remain in force. The same logic that shuttered churches and family dinners was used to close gun stores, halt training classes, and restrict the exercise of the Second Amendment under the banner of “public health.” If a dinner between a media figure and a government bureaucrat is suddenly essential while a gun shop is not, the precedent is clear: rights become privileges granted or withheld at the whim of those in power.

The lesson is straightforward—never outsource your constitutional protections to the same people who view them as optional. The right to keep and bear arms exists precisely because history shows governments will always find a crisis convenient enough to justify disarming or restricting the law-abiding. When the rules are written to apply only to thee and not to me, the only reliable safeguard is an armed, informed citizenry that refuses to trade liberty for the illusion of safety.
