For the 2A community this shift is more than academic; it is existential. The same people who excused perjury and obstruction now treat the Second Amendment as a bargaining chip to be traded for votes or international optics. When character no longer constrains policy, gun-control proposals arrive without the traditional brake of “would a decent person even suggest this?” We see magazine bans, pistol braces, and “assault weapon” definitions drafted by staffers who have never touched a firearm, yet face zero political cost because the character test has been retired. The lesson is clear: if integrity is optional, then every right—including the one that guarantees all others—becomes optional too.

The practical takeaway for gun owners is to stop waiting for the old rules to return. Elections are now won by raw turnout and narrative control, not by who passes a character exam. That means the 2A community must treat every race as a firewall election, support candidates who will actually expand carry rights and block new restrictions, and build parallel institutions—legal defense funds, training networks, state-level coalitions—that do not rely on the moral credibility of national politicians.
