Murphy: Congress Is Restraining Trump from Restarting ‘Illegal’ Iran ‘War’

Listen to Article

Sen. Chris Murphy’s push to handcuff President Trump with a war-powers resolution isn’t just Beltway theater—it’s a calculated attempt to strip the executive of the very flexibility the Constitution’s framers reserved for sudden threats. By framing any future strike on Iranian proxies or nuclear sites as an “illegal war,” Murphy and his allies are telegraphing that they intend to treat every kinetic decision as a congressional permission slip, a precedent that would handcuff any future commander-in-chief facing an imminent domestic or overseas danger. For the Second Amendment community the message is unmistakable: if Congress can micro-manage the use of carrier strike groups, it can just as easily micro-manage the use of the individual right to keep and bear arms under the banner of “public safety.”

The deeper implication is strategic. Iran’s mullahs and their terror networks watch these domestic power struggles the way predators watch herd animals; every signal that U.S. leadership is internally divided lowers the perceived cost of testing American resolve. That testing often arrives first through asymmetric channels—proxy militias, cyber strikes, or weapons pipelines to Mexican cartels—that ultimately circle back to American streets in the form of smuggled full-auto conversions, improvised explosives, and fentanyl precursors. Citizens who rely on the Second Amendment as the last line of defense against both foreign-enabled crime and government overreach therefore have a direct stake in preserving an executive that can act decisively rather than waiting for 535 legislators to green-light a response.

Bottom line, Murphy’s resolution is less about preventing “endless war” than about shifting the constitutional balance so that future presidents must ask progressive senators for permission before they neutralize threats. The 2A community should read that maneuver for what it is: an incremental erosion of sovereign decision-making that, if normalized, will eventually be turned inward against the individual right itself.
