MS NOW’s Mohyeldin: Saying We’re Fighting Islamic Theocracy in Iran Is Interpreted as ‘Possible Call to Violence’

Listen to Article

In a jaw-dropping display of linguistic gymnastics on MS NOW’s “The Weeknight,” host Ayman Mohyeldin warned that framing the struggle against Iran’s Islamic theocracy as a “civilizational war,” as Sen. Lindsey Graham has done, risks being interpreted as a “possible call to violence.” This pearl-clutching came while discussing a recent shooting at an Islamic Center in San Diego, an incident Mohyeldin seemed eager to tether to inflammatory political rhetoric rather than the complex realities of radical ideology and individual criminal acts. The not-so-subtle message? Speaking plainly about the dangers of theocratic regimes that export terrorism, suppress women, and execute dissidents is somehow more dangerous than the theocracy itself.

For the 2A community, this represents yet another front in the war on honest language. When mainstream media figures equate strong condemnation of jihadist ideology or tyrannical regimes with incitement, they erode the cultural confidence necessary to defend not just our Second Amendment rights but the broader Western values that underpin them. Americans have historically understood that an armed citizenry serves as both a deterrent to domestic tyranny and a bulwark against ideological movements that view individual liberty as anathema. Suggesting that naming the enemy clearly somehow constitutes a dog whistle for violence is a rhetorical trap designed to disarm us morally long before any legislative attempt to disarm us physically.

The implications should alarm every gun owner who recognizes that self-defense extends beyond personal protection to defending a civilization willing to resist theocratic fascism. If criticizing Iran’s regime for its nuclear ambitions, its funding of Hamas and Hezbollah, and its brutal treatment of its own people is reframed as dangerous extremism, then the Overton window has shifted dangerously toward protecting the sensitivities of Islamists over the security and clarity of free societies. The 2A community has always understood that rights come with the responsibility of moral clarity. We cannot defend liberty with firearms alone if we allow the media to criminalize the very words needed to identify the threats that make those firearms necessary in the first place.
