A new poll shows that only 57 percent of Rep. Haley Stevens’ voters are willing to back Abdul El-Sayed, the self-described socialist who just won the Democratic primary. That 43-point gap is more than a polling footnote; it’s a flashing red light that suburban swing voters who once tolerated Stevens’ gun-control votes are balking at a candidate whose platform includes “Medicare for All,” a wealth tax, and the usual laundry list of restrictions on law-abiding gun owners.

For the 2A community, the numbers are a reminder that electoral math still matters more than activist rhetoric. Stevens, despite her anti-gun record, at least tried to cloak her positions in the language of “commonsense safety.” El-Sayed has no such compunction; he’s openly courted Moms Demand Action and pledged to make Michigan a “national leader” in gun control. If even a sizable chunk of Stevens’ coalition refuses to follow him, it suggests that the suburban moms and independents who flipped the district blue in 2018 are not prepared to trade their Remingtons and Glocks for another round of virtue-signaling legislation.

Republicans now have a narrow but real window to turn that reluctance into turnout. A disciplined campaign that pairs economic concerns with Second Amendment messaging could peel off enough of those 43 percent to keep the seat out of socialist hands. The lesson is simple: when Democrats run candidates who treat gun owners as a problem to be solved rather than voters to be courted, they risk handing the very suburbs they need straight back to the pro-2A column.
