Michigan Democrat Jocelyn Benson’s sudden allergy to her own résumé is telling. The former SPLC staffer who once helped brand mainstream conservative and pro-Second Amendment groups as “hate organizations” is now sprinting from that record as she campaigns for governor. The SPLC’s notorious “hate map” has long been a political weapon, lumping the NRA and state-level gun-rights groups with actual extremists; Benson’s fingerprints on that project reveal a worldview that treats lawful gun owners as threats rather than constituents. By distancing herself, she tacitly admits the label is toxic with Michigan voters who prize their constitutional rights.

The stakes are straightforward. As secretary of state, Benson already used her office to tighten administrative rules on firearms transfers and to champion red-flag proposals that bypass due process. Elevating her to the governor’s mansion would hand the state’s emergency powers, National Guard oversight, and regulatory apparatus to someone whose ideological résumé includes equating gun ownership with bigotry. That is more than an academic concern: every past SPLC alum elevated to high office has doubled down on restrictions once the cameras are off. Michigan’s shall-issue carry law, its robust self-defense statutes, and its shooting-sports economy would all sit squarely in the cross-hairs.

Benson’s flight from the SPLC is an admission that those associations are political liabilities, yet her record shows a consistent pattern of treating gun owners as a problem to be managed rather than a right to be protected.
