Mamdani: ‘ICE Should Be Abolished’ — ‘No Way to Reform This Kind of Cruelty’

Listen to Article

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s call to abolish ICE isn’t just another progressive talking point—it’s a direct challenge to the idea that sovereign nations get to decide who enters and stays. By framing enforcement as irredeemable “cruelty,” Mamdani joins a growing chorus that treats border control itself as the problem rather than the solution to cartel-driven fentanyl flows, gang recruitment, and the strain on public resources. For the 2A community, this rhetoric matters because the same logic that deems immigration enforcement “beyond reform” is already being applied to lawful gun owners: if an agency or a right can’t be perfected to progressive standards, it must be dismantled.

The practical effect of gutting ICE would be an open invitation for repeat cross-border offenders, many of whom have already demonstrated contempt for U.S. law. Data from multiple administrations shows that a significant percentage of those released into the interior after initial encounters later commit additional crimes, including violent felonies. Law-abiding citizens who rely on the Second Amendment for self-defense would face an expanded pool of individuals who entered unlawfully and have little incentive to respect the very statutes that disarm them in many jurisdictions. In short, weakening immigration enforcement doesn’t just affect visa overstays—it directly enlarges the threat environment that millions of Americans mitigate with constitutionally protected firearms.

Mamdani’s absolutist stance also reveals the deeper strategic play: normalize the notion that certain government functions are so tainted they must vanish, then apply the same standard to policing, prosecution, and eventually the right to keep and bear arms. The 2A community has watched this pattern unfold in sanctuary cities that already refuse cooperation with ICE detainers; those same jurisdictions frequently lead the charge for magazine bans, red-flag laws, and permit-to-purchase schemes. If the mayor’s vision prevails, the result won’t be a more humane system—it will be fewer tools for removing criminal aliens and more pressure on citizens to defend themselves in an environment where federal enforcement has been deliberately hobbled.
