Maine SoS, Dem Sen. Candidate: Need to Keep Platner’s Movement to Beat Collins So We Can ‘Abolish ICE’

Listen to Article

Maine Democrats are openly admitting that their path to unseating Sen. Susan Collins runs through a candidate whose signature issue is abolishing ICE, and the 2A community should treat that admission as a flashing red warning light. Shenna Bellows’s insistence that Graham Platner’s “movement” must be carried into November reveals a party that views border enforcement as an obstacle rather than a legitimate function of government. For gun owners, the connection is straightforward: the same coalition that wants to dismantle the agency responsible for interior immigration enforcement is the coalition that has spent the last decade pushing magazine bans, red-flag laws, and universal background checks that treat lawful ownership as inherently suspect. When politicians frame ICE as illegitimate, they are also signaling that any federal agency enforcing rules they dislike can be delegitimized next.

The timing matters. Collins has a long record of occasional bipartisan votes that have frustrated both sides, yet she remains one of the few remaining Senate Republicans from a state that has trended left in presidential elections. Replacing her with a candidate whose base demands the elimination of ICE would shift the chamber’s balance on every issue that touches federal power, including the ATF’s ability to rewrite pistol-brace rules or pistol definitions by administrative fiat. Gun owners in Maine and across the country have watched how quickly state-level “assault weapon” bans and permitting schemes spread once one-party control is achieved; a Senate without Collins would remove a critical procedural check on that momentum at the federal level.

The larger lesson is that 2A supporters cannot afford to treat immigration enforcement and gun rights as unrelated silos. The same progressive infrastructure that funds and staffs the “abolish ICE” effort is the infrastructure that staffs campus carry bans, funds Moms Demand Action chapters, and lobbies for the next National Tracing Center data grab. When Maine Democrats say they need Platner’s movement to win, they are telling gun owners exactly whose movement they intend to empower.
