Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey is asking voters to approve Question 9 in November so the state can add bans covering certain rifles and homemade firearms. She appeared Sunday with educators and supporters to back the measure.

Secretary of State William Galvin said the question also widens the red flag statute, sets a minimum age of 21 for owning semiautomatic rifles and shotguns, treats bump stocks and trigger cranks as machine guns, covers parts used to build silencers, and bars firearms from government buildings, polling places, and schools except in limited cases. The measure funds violence prevention work and seeks to keep guns from people judged a danger to themselves or others.
