Sarah Trone Garriott’s refusal to draw any line on either abortion or the medicalization of minors isn’t just another progressive dodge—it’s a window into the same mindset that treats constitutional rights as negotiable privileges. When a candidate for federal office insists that no age, no medical threshold, and no parental objection is sufficient to halt cross-sex hormones or surgeries on children, she is effectively arguing that the state has no compelling interest in protecting the bodily integrity of minors. That logic travels quickly from the exam room to the gun safe: if government can be barred from shielding kids from irreversible medical interventions, it can just as easily be barred from shielding citizens from the loss of their Second Amendment rights. The same activists who insist that “gender-affirming care” must remain between doctor and patient are the first to claim that “assault weapons” have no place between citizen and government.

The Iowa race matters because it tests whether voters will reward candidates who treat every limit—on abortion, on youth transitions, on self-defense—as inherently suspect. Garriott’s posture reveals a coherent philosophy: individual autonomy is absolute until it collides with progressive policy goals, at which point autonomy is redefined as whatever the latest medical or academic consensus demands. For the 2A community, that means the same people who refuse to say when a fourteen-year-old has received “enough” puberty blockers are unlikely to concede that law-abiding adults have received “enough” magazines or semiautomatic rifles. The constitutional stakes are identical; only the target changes. Voters who value an unchanging right to keep and bear arms should recognize that a politician unwilling to set any boundary on state-sanctioned alteration of children’s bodies is equally unwilling to set boundaries on state curtailment of adults’ firearms.
