Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents took 50,925 people into custody in August for being in the United States without legal status, the agency’s highest monthly total on record. The figure topped July’s 50,208 arrests and marked the third consecutive month in which ICE set a new single-month high. June had previously led with nearly 44,000 arrests, and August was the second straight month above 50,000.

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin said the results reflect enforcement under President Trump. The Center for Immigration Studies reported that the nation’s foreign-born population has dropped by about 2.9 million since the start of Trump’s second term.
