Houston Independent School District, Texas’s largest, lost 21,000 Hispanic students and 190 million dollars in state aid as enrollment fell.

The district counted 5,800 fewer students in 2023, 7,400 fewer in 2024, and 8,000 fewer in 2025-26, with Hispanic enrollment down about 6 percent, according to Latin Times. Immigrant enrollment exceeded 17,500 in 2024-25 then fell by nearly 4,000, or 22 percent, the next year.

Texas sends districts up to 6,160 dollars per student. HISD cut 1,500 office jobs, laid off 200 education specialists, and reduced bus routes.
