New Jersey Democratic Representative Josh Gottheimer said on CNN News Central Wednesday that advanced AI models from leading labs should face mandatory government national security review before public release. He stated firms cannot oversee themselves and that such checks are needed to protect critical infrastructure, Americans, and cybersecurity.
Gottheimer added that the technology is already present, so the country must compete successfully while remaining careful. He described suggestions from Senator Bernie Sanders and others to simply eliminate it as impractical, and likewise dismissed the idea that government should leave the matter entirely to industry.
He said an AI commission and his own recent efforts seek a balanced path with firm safeguards for the public and for security.
