Rep. Jeff Van Drew’s outburst against the filibuster is more than a Beltway tantrum—it’s a flashing warning light for every gun owner who still believes the Senate’s 60-vote threshold is the last reliable speed bump on the road to nationwide gun control. When a Republican publicly brands the filibuster “obstructionist” and “harmful,” he’s handing Democrats the rhetorical crowbar they need to dismantle the very rule that has repeatedly blocked magazine bans, red-flag mandates, and universal background-check expansions. The 2A community has long counted on the Senate’s arcane math; if that math changes, the next assault-weapons bill won’t need 50 Republican defections—it will need only Kamala Harris’s tie-breaker.

The timing is especially dangerous. With Democrats already floating carve-outs for “voting rights” and “reproductive justice,” a precedent that lets the majority nuke the filibuster for one issue makes it politically easier to nuke it for guns. The smarter play for pro-2A lawmakers is to treat the filibuster like constitutional carry: don’t touch it, don’t trade it, and don’t give the other side any daylight to argue that rules only matter when they’re winning. If Van Drew wants to vent about Senate gridlock, he should aim his anger at Democrats who refuse to negotiate, not at the 200-year-old brake pedal that has so far kept the most extreme gun-control vehicles from reaching the President’s desk.
